Peter Hughes started working as a railway safety professional 30 years ago when he joined British Rail Research on the software development team for signalling systems. In 1996 he moved to Australia to take up the role of Safety Risk Manager at Queensland Rail. In Australia, he worked as a consultant specialising in level crossing safety and accident investigation; he worked with numerous railways in the Asia Pacific region including Indian Railways, and KTMB in Malaysia. Since returning to the UK in 2014 he has worked as a researcher in the Institute of Railway Research at Huddersfield University where he is currently completing his PhD research in railway safety.
