John began his career with Essex Water in 1978. His first senior management role in 1988 was as Water Quality and Laboratory Manager and in 1997 John became Engineering and Production Director. Following the merger of Essex & Suffolk Water and Northumbrian Water (NWL) in 2000, John had further operational director posts across NWL and in 2011 moved to the post of Water Director for Northumbrian Water Group with overall responsibility for water operations across the company. John was responsible for a team of over 900 people covering long term planning for water resources, water treatment and distribution to customers.
Over 20 years he led the promotion and delivery of the Abberton Scheme which was the largest water resources project in the UK for 30 years and resulted in Essex, the driest county, to have surplus supply for the foreseeable future. During this time, he was also responsible for leakage levels in the Essex & Suffolk area being the lowest in the UK, and amongst the lowest levels worldwide.
Last year he moved to Severn Trent Water to become Head of Strategic Asset Planning.
