Biography

Andrew is an independent railway engineering consultant who has worked in the industry for more than 30 years, after starting his career with British Rail as a sponsored student in the 1980s. After working on Southern Region as a bridge design and construction engineer, in permanent way maintenance and in senior management during privatisation, he moved into commercial and business development roles before leading the North Europe division of the international rail consultancy Systra.

He has participated in many interesting projects in the UK and abroad, building teams of British, French and Danish railway engineers and contributing to the management, design and construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (HS1), Crossrail, Crossrail 2 and High Speed 2 as well as Cityringen and Light Rail projects. Andrew now undertakes assurance and acts as a specialist management consultant, currently advising HS2 Ltd with the procurement and contracting strategy for rail systems.

He is past Chair of the Railway Engineers’ Forum (REF), which seeks to bring together the voices of all the professional institutions in the rail sector: their primary message being the need for high quality professional training for engineers and operators.

He has also served as Chair of the Railway Civil Engineers’ Association and has been a member of the Routes into Rail Board and the Institution of Civil Engineers’ Expert Panel for Transport. He is a guest lecturer on rail systems at the National College for High-Speed Rail and a degree course tutor for the Institution of Railway Operators.
